Nova Studio builds precision audio hardware, but their visual presence hadn't kept pace with the product. The old site was templated, the mark was inconsistent across packaging and social, and nothing communicated the obsessive attention to detail baked into the engineering.
The self-set brief was simple to state and hard to deliver: make the brand as considered as the product.
We built the identity around a single idea — the waveform as geometry. Circles and radial lines stand in for sound the way a waveform does on a screen: precise, mechanical, quietly expressive.
- A monochrome base with one electric accent, used only for the signal — never decoration.
- A grid derived from concentric circles, applied to layout, packaging and motion.
- Typography doing double duty as both voice and graphic device.
We audited twelve real competitor and adjacent brands and mapped the category's visual clichés — gradients, lifestyle photography, faux-scientific diagrams — then wrote a founder's voice for the fictional company from that gap. That invented language became the backbone of the brand voice.
Over four rounds of exploration, the mark moved from a literal waveform icon to the reduced, geometric circle-and-ring system that shipped — simpler, more distinct, and far easier to apply consistently across formats.
A single grotesk family carries the whole system — an extra-bold cut for headlines and product names, a lighter weight for specification and long-form copy.
Near-black and off-white carry the system; a single signal blue is reserved for the one thing that matters most on any given screen or surface.
The website carries the same circular grid into layout — product pages built from concentric modules, navigation that mirrors the brand mark, and a configurator that visualises product specs as literal waveforms.
Resolved across packaging, site, social and retail — a system precise enough to survive scaling from a business card to a shopfront window.
Because this is a concept piece there are no live performance figures to report. These were the criteria the work was judged against instead:
- A mark that stays legible from a 16px favicon to a shopfront window.
- One accent colour, reserved strictly for the signal — never decoration.
- A layout grid derived from the mark itself, so packaging and web share one geometry.
